Culbreth Middle School Elective Class: The Culbreth program is an elective class which serves 6th-8th grades during the traditional school day hours. With an enrollment of approximately 30 students, the purpose of this class is to provide extra support to students who are achieving below their potential and do not have learning disabilities. Our site coordinator helps students set quarterly goals and assists each student in achieving these goals.
Brothers Learning and Achieving as Citizens: This program is an alternative learning opportunity that is designed to improve school citizenship, increase academic achievement, and reduce situations or behaviors that impede success in school for African-American males. This program is available at Stanback and Stanford Middle Schools.
Middle School After School: A North Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention “Support Our Students” sponsored program, currently we have an after school program in each of the seven middle schools across Orange County and Chapel Hill. During the traditional school year, we typically serve 1200 students!
Project Smith Latino Initiative: This program was implemented in order to serve the growing needs of Latino students at Smith Middle School in Chapel Hill. Many of these students need extra support adjusting to the school environment, especially those whose primary language is not English. This program provides tutorial support as well as one-on-one mentoring.
Culbreth Middle School Project: The Culbreth program is an elective class which serves 6th-8th grades during the traditional school day hours. With an enrollment of approximately 30 students, the purpose of this class is to provide extra support to students who are achieving below their potential and do not have learning disabilities. Our site coordinator helps students set quarterly goals and assists each student in achieving these goals.
The Green Awakening (TGA): CISOC’s Newest program! This math and science initiative targets rising 9th graders across both school districts to aid in the middle to high school transition. The focus of the program is on “green” engineering and students take part in special projects such as the building of solar cars, solar ovens, and wind turbines. Through these projects and through field trips to area university science and engineering labs, students get a real-world application of the math and science education they receive. TGA starts with an intensive summer camp and follows through to high school and the traditional school year where students are involved in a club that helps them stay on track with academic goals they set with our site coordinators.
